Do you dream of a vibrant flower garden but worry it might be too difficult to achieve in our desert climate? Harsh temperatures, poor soil, and strong winds can pose challenges for annual flowers, requiring frequent planting and replacement.

The Secret to Success: Embrace Perennials!

Perennials are your desert garden’s best friend. These flowering stars return year after year, getting bigger and more beautiful each season. They’re a low-maintenance solution for busy homeowners and budget-conscious gardeners alike.

Benefits of Perennials:

  • Effortless Elegance: Perennials require less planting and maintenance compared to annuals, freeing up your time to enjoy your garden.
  • Blooming All Year: With careful selection, you can have continuous color and visual interest throughout the seasons.
  • Cost-Effective Choice: Perennials are an investment that pays off year after year, unlike annuals that need to be repurchased each season.
  • Water-Wise Winners: Many perennials are well-adapted to desert conditions and require less frequent watering than thirsty annuals.
  • The English Garden Look: Achieve that classic, romantic aesthetic with a variety of perennial flowering plants.

Star Nursery’s Top Picks for Desert Perennials:

Start your journey to a vibrant, low-maintenance flower garden with these exceptional perennials that thrive in our desert climate:

Black-Eyed Susan: This cheerful daisy loves our mornings! Easy to grow and requiring infrequent watering, it bursts with sunshine-yellow flowers accented by black or green centers. Plant them in areas receiving morning sun for best results.

Blanket Flower (Gaillardia): A close relative of the Black-Eyed Susan, it offers a vibrant color palette with orange, yellow, scarlet, and brown bands on its daisy-like blooms. It’s a water-wise bloomer that spreads readily in suitable locations, making it an excellent choice for filling empty spaces.

Canna Lily: The canna lily adds a touch of the tropics to your desert oasis. It features bold, banana-like foliage and stunning orchid-like flowers in shades of red, yellow, and orange. They come in tall (6 ft+) and dwarf (3 ft) varieties. Remember to cut back the foliage in winter after it browns completely.

Chrysanthemum: These fall favorites come in a rainbow of colors except true blue. Some varieties even bloom in spring! Pinch off early buds for a bushier plant with more blooms. To encourage fall blooming, prune them back in June.

Coreopsis: Tough and low-maintenance, Coreopsis offers a continuous show of yellow or bi-colored, daisy-like flowers from spring through fall. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) encourages continued blooming.

Daylily: Modern hybrids of Daylilies offer a vast color palette, including pinks, lavenders, and bicolor, alongside the traditional yellow, red, and orange. Each flower lasts a day, but each stalk produces multiple blooms throughout the season. You can divide Daylilies every 2-3 years to expand your garden.

Columbine: Thanks to modern hybrids, Columbine is delicate and charming. It offers nodding stems adorned with bell-shaped flowers in shades of red, yellow, and more. While it tolerates some sun, it prefers late afternoon shade, especially in our hot desert climate. To keep it thriving, provide rich, well-drained soil. This beauty adds a touch of elegance to traditional gardens.

Daylily: These cheerful perennials live up to their name! Each flower lasts just a day, but each stalk continuously shows blooms throughout the season. Modern Daylily hybrids offer a vast color palette, including pinks, lavenders, and bicolors, alongside the classic yellow, red, and orange. Easy to care for, they can be divided every 2-3 years to expand your garden’s beauty.

Dianthus (Pinks): Popular for its resemblance to carnations, Dianthus adds a touch of charm to your garden. These low-maintenance perennials come in a variety of vibrant colors and bloom primarily in spring and fall. Featuring narrow, blue-green or gray-green foliage, Dianthus typically grows between 6 inches and 2 feet tall, making it a versatile choice for borders, containers, or edging.

Echinacea (Coneflower): This hardy perennial is a magnet for bees and butterflies! Echinacea blooms throughout the summer and into fall, featuring large daisy-like flowers with prominent brown cones.

Gaura: A true desert native, Gaura boasts delicate branching flower spikes covered in pink or white blooms throughout a remarkably long blooming season. It thrives in both dry and traditional garden settings. Deadheading promotes continued flowering.

Gazania (Treasure Flower): This low-growing perennial is a fantastic ground cover. Vibrant daisy-like flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red, and white cover its mat-like foliage. These sun-worshippers close up at night or during cloudy weather.

Geranium: Don’t be fooled by the name! These aren’t the geraniums commonly found in bedding plants.  Desert-friendly geraniums offer a wider variety, including:

  • Martha Washington Geranium: This variety boasts vibrant, neon-colored blooms in various hues.
  • Trailing Ivy Geranium: As the name suggests, this tough variety is perfect for cascading down containers and hanging baskets.

Both types of geraniums benefit from some protection during the coldest desert nights.

Penstemon: Heat-loving and easy to grow, many Penstemon varieties are native to our desert region. Their colorful, trumpet-shaped flowers are a delightful sight and a favorite among hummingbirds.

Ruellia: This hardy, moderately sized shrub is a low-maintenance bloomer that thrives in full or partial sun. Throughout the warm season, it produces vibrant flowers. Be mindful that Ruellia can spread readily through seeds if planted in fertile soil.

Society Garlic: This ornamental relative of garlic offers a unique combination of beauty and utility.  It displays spikes of attractive lavender flowers throughout the year, with foliage that smells like garlic (some even use the leaves for seasoning!). This versatile plant fits well in both traditional and dry landscapes.

Sunscape Daisy (African Daisy): A popular perennial for a reason, Sunscape Daisies offer a burst of color with their vibrant daisy-like flowers in a range of shades like white, pink, purple, yellow, and orange.  They thrive in well-drained soil with a combination of morning sun and afternoon shade.  Typically growing 1 to 2 feet wide, they add a cheerful touch to any garden border.

Yarrow: Don’t underestimate the beauty of Yarrow! This tough, water-efficient perennial is a free bloomer, offering a continuous show of ferny foliage and superb, multi-colored flowers throughout the season.  These versatile blooms are perfect for cutting fresh or drying for arrangements.

Salvia: This elegant perennial offers spikes of rich blue or white flowers, with hybrid varieties like Salvia greggii and Salvia Hot Lips boasting shades of violet and pink. Salvia is a low-maintenance bloomer that complements other flowers beautifully.
